Insurance Proficiency Checks

Many marine insurance companies now require yacht owners to complete a Proficiency Assessment before they will issue or renew coverage—especially for larger or more complex vessels. Captain Jeff’s Yacht Delivery offers Insurance Proficiency Checks designed to help owners meet these requirements while building real confidence at the helm.

These assessments are conducted aboard your vessel, in real operating conditions, and are performed by a U.S. Coast Guard Licensed Master Captain with extensive experience operating yachts along the U.S. East Coast.

During the session, the captain will observe and evaluate your ability to safely operate and control your vessel. The goal is not simply to “pass a test,” but to ensure you have the skills and situational awareness expected by insurance providers and professional mariners.

A typical proficiency check may include evaluation of:
  • Pre-departure safety checks and vessel readiness
  • Basic navigation and situational awareness
  • Safe boat handling and throttle control
  • Docking and undocking procedures
  • Maneuvering in close quarters
  • Operation in wind and current
  • Use of thrusters and engines (if equipped)
  • Anchoring procedures
  • Understanding of onboard systems and safety equipment
  • General seamanship and decision-making
  •
At the conclusion of the assessment, Captain Jeff will provide documentation verifying that the proficiency check was completed. This documentation can typically be submitted directly to your marine insurance provider to satisfy underwriting requirements.

If any areas need improvement, additional hands-on instruction can also be scheduled to help you strengthen your skills and meet your insurer’s expectations with confidence.
Insurance Proficiency Checks are commonly required for:
  • New yacht purchases
  • Owners transitioning to a larger vessel
  • Policy renewals for higher-value yachts
  • Insurance companies requiring a captain’s evaluation

Because every vessel and insurance requirement can be different, these assessments are scheduled privately and tailored to your boat and insurer’s expectations.

The objective is simple: to confirm you can safely and confidently operate your yacht while meeting the requirements of your insurance provider.
